10 reasons why private weight loss surgery might work for you

  1. Many people only consider weight loss surgery when they have tried everything else, including diets, behavioural changes, exercise and counselling.  This is certainly the best way to consider surgery and interestingly, weight loss surgery has more positive data than almost any other surgical procedure in terms of effectiveness and safety
  2. Weight loss surgery isn't just the procedure itself, all good centres also include full dietary and psychological support and long term follow up so you are cared for every step of the way
  3. Often, people really can't lose the weight that they want to lose and importantly keep it off.  This could be because of your lifestyle, your genetic make-up or some other underlying causes.  For many people, weight loss surgery is the only way that they can both lose the weight and keep it off.
  4. Although the major professional bodies support weight loss surgery and the key policy makers have said that it is highly cost effective, many NHS regions still limit the number of patients who are offered the surgery.  Going private may help you to overcome this rationing.
  5. Weight loss surgery doesn't just help you to lose weight.  There is a large amount of proof to show that if you have type 2 diabetes, surgery could significantly help you (even before you lose any weight), if you have problems with breathlessness or sleep apnoea, then weight loss surgery can help here too.
  6. There are an increasing number of options in weight loss surgery, with many being reversible, if you don't like the effects.  Many of the newer short term interventions are also less expensive than, for example, a full gastric bypass
  7. You're in control.  You can decide which intervention you want (unless it's contraindicated), you can decide when you want it and you can decide who you want to do the surgery
  8. Weight loss (bariatric) surgeons are one of the few groups who have volunteered to publish the safety data associated with the procedures so you can be confident that you are in safe hands
  9. It's actually not that expensive.  If you look at for example liposuction, this can cost over £6,000 which removes some of the fat, but doesn't overcome the main problem.  For a similar price, you could have a gastric band.
  10. At The Private Surgeon, we listen and we care for you, your needs and your dreams.

Choosing Private Healthcare for weight loss surgery

Finding the right provider for your private healthcare can be confusing sometimes and at The Private Surgeon we also understand that when you need help, you need it as soon as possible, with as little fuss as possible and importantly you want to know that you are in good hands.

Well, we're here to help.

Good hands...

Professor Duff Bruce is one the leading weight loss surgeons in the UK, he has successfully completed over 500 weight loss procedures and is widely published academically with 22 published papers.  Importantly, Professor Bruce has for a long time been an active council member of BOMSS which is the professional governing body for all weight loss surgeons in the UK and is also Chair of SCOTS (Severe and Complex Obesity Treatment Service) which is a charity actively involved in improving access to the best solutions for Scotland's obese population.

As soon as possible...

We know that once you've decided that you want to have weight loss surgery, then you want it quickly.  An important part of our service is that we make sure at all times that you don't rush into something that may be wrong for you, but we will help you decide on the best solution.  If you want to talk to us though, we can make sure that you get an appointment for initial consultation very quickly.

Confusing options...

We understand.  There are many options.  There are some overseas options, which may look attractive in terms of price, but at The Private Surgeon one thing we always ensure is that you are cared for after your surgery.  This may not always be the case if you go abroad.

Which hospital and which surgeon?

The Private Surgeon works with BMI, one of the UK's leading providers of private healthcare and we can accept insurance payments from any health insurer if you are covered for the procedure.  There are many things to think about when choosing the best surgeon and hospital for you.   At The Private Surgeon we are happy to help you decide.

What is the best type of weight loss surgery?

That's a great question and one that we are often asked.

The answers is not as easy as you may think, because everyone is different.  We all have different relationships with food, different social, family and business lives and we all have different medical histories.

What The Private Surgeon will do, however, is make sure that we find the best solution for your needs.

Let's look at some of the things we will discuss:

Relationship with food.  Sounds odd doesn't it?

What we mean by that is some people snack or graze a lot, some people eat a lot at each setting and others don't eat much until their one big meal of the day.

There isn't anything badly wrong or right with any of these, although we would recommend spreading your eating throughout the day.  The old saying of breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper is still quite valid.

Unfortunately, we realise that it's not always easy to do that in today's environment.

Social, family and business lives.  If you are also cooking for your family, then we need to make sure that you can confidently continue to do that after your surgery.  Many people have business lives that also get in the way of losing weight, so we will need to look at those aspects too.

Medical history.  This is very important.  Before anyone considers weight loss surgery we always discuss any existing conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol etc so that, again we can find the best solution for you.

The most important thing to remember is that weight loss surgery should not be thought of as 'off the shelf'.  It's absolutely vital that we help you to choose what's the best option for you.

And that's exactly what we do.
